Là, j'ai fait très fort et nous avons reculé.
J'ai simplement eu envi de contourner la bulle anticyclonale qui était devant moi pour être du bon côté et avoir du bon vent.
L'idée aurait peut être été bonne sur un trimaran, là elle s'est avérée catastrophique.
En plus l'anticyclone s'est déplacé vers le Sud donc après 24H je me suis retrouvé dans la même position. Tout faux.
Je profite de ce temps calme pour ranger, nettoyer, me mitonner, bricoler.
J'ai passé une partie de la nuit dans le cockpit à rêvasser tout au bonheur d'être encore dans le Challenge. Je ne suis
pas prêt à abandonner, même si cela devait être très dur.
En fait le pilote marche donc tout va bien.

I’had a gret performance for the last 24 hours and we moved backwards.
I just wanted to go round the high zone that was in front of me to be on the right side of it and get god wind.
The idea could have been good on a big trimaran, in the actual case it is just catastrophic . To add to the catastrophe, the anticyclone has move south so I’m in the same position at the north of the high! I had all wrong. I am using the calm weather to put things in order, to clean, to take care of myself and to fix a few things.
I spent a part of the night in the cockpit, enjoying life and the pleasure of being still in a Jester Challenger. I’m not near to resigned even if it would be very demanding.
In fact the autopilot is “working” so everything goes well.

Je n'en ai pas parlé hier pour garder la primeur pour la classe de Romane mais hier j'ai eu une visite étonnante qui m'a
fait très peur. J'étais à la barre en train de régler et de rêvasser quand tout à coup, j'ai entendu un grand PUISHHH!!!
J'ai levé les yeux et j'ai vu un dos, d'un joli marron "tête de nègre", énorme surmonté d'un gros évent. Il était à une dizaine de mètres avec une trajectoire convergente
à 45°. Il a plongé est revenu cinq à six fois de différentes directions me faire des grands PUISHHH. Puis il est parti.
J'ai pas eu l'impression qu'il voulait jouer avec moi mais plutôt me dire "barre toi de mon herbe".
En tout cas je n'ai pas demandé d'explication, j'ai continué ma route doucement (j'aurais eu du mal à faire autrement) et j'étais
tout à fait d'accord avec lui.
Boudu c'est gros!!!!
J'ai décidé, à tout hasard, que c'était un cachalot.
A ce moment là, un cargo passait sur l'horizon, j'étais bien content, si par erreur le cachalot me donnait un grand coup de queue, j'avais quelqu'un à appeler à la radio.
Après la journée "off" de navigation d'hier, c'est la journée "off" du matelot, aujourd'hui. Je devais être sérieusement en manque de repos. Je suis passé sans problème,
de la grasse mâtiné, à la sieste du matin suivie de la sieste de l'après-midi et je pense que je vais me coucher tôt.

I didn’t mentioned it yesterday to keep the information primer for the class of Romane (My younger 8 years old daughter) but yesterday I had an astonishing and frightening visit . I was at the helm half tuning and half in my dreams when suddenly I heard a very loud PUISHHH!!!
I raised the eyes and sow a huge back, from a nice dark brown colour, with a big vent on top of it. He was a about 10 meters from us with a convergent track under a 45° angle. He dived and came back under the same scenario from different directions with huge PUISHHH at each time.
I realy didn’t had the feeling he was playing with us but rather that he was saying : get rid of my place.
Anywhere, I didn’t ask for any precisions, I continue my way slowly (I could hardly do anything else with the wind I had) and I completely agreed with him.
Gosh, how bid he was !!!
I’ve decided, without any knowledge on them, that it was a cachalot.
Just at the same time, a cargo ship was passing on the horizon. I felt happy to see her, because if by mistake, the cachalot would send me a tail kick, I would have someone to call on the radio.
After the “off” navigation day of yesterday today is the sailors day “off”. I had to be really in rest demand. I moved easily from the late wake up to the morning nap and then to the afternoon nap and I think I’ll go to bed early.

Je viens d'apprendre par Bertrand que Andromeda s'est détourné au Açores pour récupérer des pièces de pilote.
Sherman doit être très en colère contre Plastimo. En attendant mon fan club, la veille du départ j'ai dîné à côté de lui.
Il m'a expliqué qu'il n'arrivait pas à obtenir un nouveau pilot Navik (le sien ayant déjà 3 ou 4 traversé à son actif).
C'était épique.
Il avait même reçu, la veille un pilote neuf avec un fut long (comme prévu) et séparément un fut long lui aussi alors qu'il aurait dû recevoir un fut court
pour faire le montage lui même.
Aujourd'hui, j'ai rencontré une bouée, une belle bouée orange sphérique de pêcheur avec parfois un homard au bout. Le seul détail c'est qu'ici
il doit y avoir 4800m d'eau sous la quille.
J'ai aussi vu des paquets d'algues brunes : ça sent la marée basse pas loin.
Hier j'ai changé d'heure en passant le méridien 45 W. Maintenant je demande des fichiers vents pour la zone "Atlantic" et non plus "EastAtlantic".
Hier soir le maître queue nous a préparé une cassolette du pêcheur et le sommelier nous a sorti un Muscadet sur lie de la cave, j'en ai profité
pour manger la dernière pomme.
Nous avons maintenant grâce à cet Imb... de navigateur (il n'est pas au courant mais j'envisage de le débarquer) 356Nm de retard sur l'objectif des
25 jours soit 3 jours de plus.
Ici du soleil et du vent: tout va bien.

I just learned by Bertrand (my brother) that Andromeda is diverting to the Azores to pick up some autopilot parts.
Sherman must but very upset against Plastimo! While I was waiting my fan club, the evening before the start, I had supper next to him.
He explained me that he couldn’t get a new Navik autopilot (his has already 3 or 4 crossing).
It was an epic story with several episodes… The previous day he received a new pilot with a long barrel (as expected) and separately an other long barrel as he expected a short barrel in order to reassemble a short barrel pilot.
Today, I met a boy, a nice orange round fishing boat boy that sometime have a lobster underneath. The only odd detail is that here we must have 4800 meters water depth under the hull.
I also so some sea weeds : it smells low tide not too far.
Yesterday I change my living time as I passed the 45°W meridian. Now I ask wind grib files for the “Atlantic” area and no more “Eastatlantic” area.
Yesterday evening the cook prepared us a “cassolette du pecheur” and the wine keeper opened a “Muscadet sur lie” white wine, I had the last apple for desert.
We are now, due to that stupid navigator (he doesn’t know but I think I’ll fire him as soon as we will arrive) 356Nm late on the 25 crossing days objective. It makes 3 days more.
The weather is shinny and we have wind : everything is OK.

Le vent a été faible toute la journée d'hier, j'ai quand même pu faire 91Nm dans le bon sens.
Aujourd'hui j'attends le vent. Les voiles sont affalés pour qu'elles ne s'abîment pas en battant.
Jolie situation anticyclonique. Il n'y a qu'à attendre patiemment que le vent rentre. D'après la météo j'aurai
du avoir un peu de vent.
Solitaire, Immobile, au milieu de nul part : voilà une situation d'avenir !
Il ne reste que le temps qui coule.
La nuit les "hirondelles" des tempêtes utilisent le sillage comme zone de pêche. Il y en a quelques dizaines qui me
suivent et qui piaillent de temps en temps.
Une bande de dauphin à croisée au large mais n'est pas venue me voir.
Les "albatros" volent au ras de la houle sans jamais toucher c'est un régal de les voir voler.

Nice anticyclonic situation. There is nothing else to do than wait for the wind to come. The weather forecast says I should have some wind!
Alone and standing still in the middle of nowhere: that’s a promising situation!
The only movement is the time that flows.
At night, the storm sparrows are using the boat track as fishing zone. There are dozens of them following me and crying all the time.
A dolphin group passed they way but didn’t pay me a visit;
The “albatross” are flying close to the swell without touching the water. It’s a pleasure to look them flying.

Aujourd'hui, au jeu de 11 heure j'avais fait 34Nm vers l'arrivée. A ce rythme là je ne suis pas rendu.
Cet après midi je suis passé sous les 1000Nm à parcourir.
Il n'y a pas de vent, mais alors pas du tout, je me débat pour avancer un peu dans le bon sens. J'ai l'impression d'être
sorti du Gulfstream et d'avoir un petit courant favorable.
Aujourd'hui, j'ai croisé une ravissante méduse, peut être la forme adulte de mes bateaux à voiles.
D'ailleurs j'en ai aussi croisé quelque uns par ici.
Vue de loin on dirait un demi pamplemousse translucide d'un rose bonbon sucé qui flotterait sur l'eau.
De plus près le demi c'est plutôt un boudin avec une espèce de crête.
Il est posé sur une galette translucide qui flotte à la surface. Dessous il y a de ravissantes flagelles bleues marines.
pour attraper les petits poissons, je suppose; à vous donner envie de lui faire un câlin.
J'ai aussi croisé un aileron, je suppose de requin, qui traçait sa route paisiblement suivi d'un autre aileron qui balançait de droite et de gauche mollement.
Hier soir au couché du soleil des dauphins sont venus faire des cabrioles en l'air, c'était bien.

Today at the 11H00 game my score was 34Nm towards the arrival. At that rhythms I’m not arrived.
This afternoon I passed under the 1000Nm to go.
There is no wind but no wind at all, I’m fighting to move in the right direction. I have the feeling that I’m now out of the Gulfstream and having a slight favourable current.
Today, I crossed a beautiful jellyfish, perhaps the adult form of my sailing boats.
In fact I still crossed a few of them around here.
Seen from far it looks like a half transparent pink grapefruit that would float on the water.
From near, the upper part looks more like a roll with a sort undulated top.
It is lying on a transparent pancake that floats on the surface. Underwater there are some beautiful dark blue flagella to catch little fishes I suppose; I would nearly want to touch them.
I also crossed an aileron, I suppose from a shark, that was going on a smooth path, followed one meter behind by an other aileron that was slowly rocking from side to side.
Yesterday evening dolphins came and jumped out of the water, it was great.

Hier après midi, le vent est rentré, puis il est reparti dans la nuit et nous voilà de nouveau dans de la pétôle,
heureusement il est de travers et il n'y a pas trop de houle, cela permet de se traîner.
J'ai fait 86Nm hier et j'ai enfin passé la pointe du banc de Terre neuve.
Je n'ai plus de courant contre, c'est déjà ça.
Hier a été une journée maussade, probablement un excès de frustrations multiples et diverses: calme, inquiétude sur le PA,
arrivée tardive sur Newport qui ne me permettra pas de ranger sereinement le bateau....
Cette nuit il y a eu un moment magique. J'étais dehors en train de m'occuper du bateau sous un grain. Soudain des dauphins
sont venus jouer avec le bateau; Avec la phosphorescence du plancton cela donnait l'impression d'un feu d'artifice sous l'eau.
Cela partait dans tous les sens et il était possible de suivre leurs trajectoires.

Yesterday afternoon, the wind came back then he left again at night and we are again in calm wind. Hopefully it is a cross wind and there is no swell. It allows us to move slowly.
My yesterday score was 86Nm and at last I crossed the southern limit of the Bank of Newfoundland. I don’t have the current against me any more.
Yesterday was a greyish day, probably an overdose of various frustrations: calms, anxiety related to the autopilot health, late arrival in Newport that will not allow me to prepare the boat for the boatyard on a serene rhythm…
This night I had a magic time. I was outside under a shower, tuning the boat. Suddenly dolphins came to play with the boat. With the plankton phosphorescence it was looking like a sub aquatic firework. It was fusing in all directions and it was possible to follow their trajectories.

Les jours se suivent et se ressemblent: grand soleil, pas de vent, beaucoup de réglages pour essayer
de gagner pas grand chose.
Le moral va mieux et j'ai retrouvé le plaisir d'être en mer, bien que je ne l'ai pas vraiment perdu. J'étais juste maussade.
Hier j'ai rencontré à ma grande surprise une tortue qui faisait la sieste au soleil. Une vraie tortue d'une trentaine de kg,
avec plein de coquillage sur la carapace, les pattes sorties, le museau au ras de l'eau, elle avait l'air bien.
Le bateau est passé à 1m sans la réveiller, c'est un peu désobligeant, mais bon.
Je vois beaucoup de mammifères marins, surtout des dauphins. J'ai eu le droit à la carte postale avec les 4 dauphins
qui sautent ensemble la même vague.
J'ai aussi vu, mais de plus loin, des bêtes plus grosses d'une jolie couleur café au lait.
Les méduses avaient laissé en cadeau des flagelles sur le bout de l'hydrogénérateur. Quand je l'ai remonté,
sans gants, j'ai pu constaté de manu que c'est délicieusement urticant.

Days are following days and are looking the same : sunny, no wind and a lot of tuning to try and move slowly westerly.
The temper is better and I am happy again to be at sea. I wasn’t really unhappy but just less happy than usual. I was just greyish.
Yesterday I was really surprised to cross a tortoise that was having a nap in the sun. A real tortoise of about 30 kilos, with lots of shells on her back. The head and legs were out, only the nose was above the water and it looked very well. The boat passed at less than a meter without waking it up. It could have at least open politely an eye, but too bad.
I cross a lot of sea mammals mostly dolphins. I had the pleasure of the postcard with 4 dolphins jumping out together of the same wave.
I also crossed, but from further, some bigger beasts of a nice milk coffee colour.
The jellyfish left me, as presents, some flagella on the hydro-generator rope. When I brought back the rope, without gloves, I had the pleasure to discover that they are really irritants.

Après une panne totale de vent ce matin, petite brise paisible cet après midi.
Brume mince et humide ce matin, grand soleil cet après midi et pendant la nuit.
Au jeu de 11 heure: 84 Nm quand même. Nous avons passé les 2000Nm depuis le départ.
J'en ai profité pour apprendre à faire des épissures sur des bouts tressés.
hier, mon écoute courte de foc a profité d'une inattention pour glisser à l'eau, je ne m'en suis même pas
rendu compte, mais elle n'est plus là. C'était l'occasion d'en faire une nouvelle toute belle.
Après les veilles de la nuit, je fais des siestes confortables.
Je profite de la mer et j'arriverai quand le vent le voudra.

La journée d'hier a battu des records d'absence de vent et pour une bonne partie de la journée dans le nez. Une brise s'est levé en milieu de nuit. Résultat : 61Nm au compteur.
Ce matin cela va un peu mieux et cela devrait s'améliorer dans la journée (à voir).
j'ai passé mon après-midi à préparer un gros bidouillage pour purger le vérin de pilote automatique en mer, avec les moyens du bord: de l'électricité dans les deux sens en 12V, en 5,2V de l'hydraulique pour recycler le liquide, de la mécanique...
Le tout pour constater, une fois tout en place qu'il n'y a pas d'air dans le vérin: bonne nouvelle.
Le PA doit donc être opérationnel complètement.
J'ai eu droit à une "attaque" de dauphin" façon attaque commando par une nuée de jet ski à la James Bond. Tous de front sur 100m et sautant toutes les vagues. J'ai même pas eu peur !
La lune refait son apparition avec un premier cartier en début de nuit.

Yesterday was a breaking record day of no wind mostly dead in the nose. A breeze rose in the middle of the night. Result: a score of 61Nm.
This morning it’s a little better and it should improve during the day (to be confirmed).
I spent my afternoon preparing a huge manipulation in order to purge the hydraulic shaft with the board means : both way electricity in 12V, one way in 5.2V, hydraulic fluid to be recycled, some mecanics…
All that to discover, once every thing in place that there is no air in the hydraulic shaft : good news.
The autopilot must be completely operational.
I supported a dolphin “attack” in James Bond Jet-sky commando attack way. All on the same line 100 meters wide, rushing towards us and jumping above the waves. I wasn’t afraid!
Moon is back with the first quarter early in the night.

Aujourd'hui j'ai profité d'une journée de vent pour faire de la voile.
C'est reparti. L'anticyclone s'est un peu éloigné et semble ne plus avoir envie
de me suivre.
Du coup une journée de près, quand même, mais sans tirer de bords.
C'est paisible, ça déroule souplement sans mouiller avec du soleil en prime.
Au jeu de 11 heure le jeudi 29 juin , nous avons parcouru 109Nm en 24 heures et il nous reste 570 Nm à courir;
D'après mes calculs (hypothèse de 100Nm par jours) cela nous fait arriver le mardi 2 juillet dans la soirée.
Ceci sous réserve que la météo reste convenable.
Un groupe de 4 dauphins est venu jouer dans l'étrave ce matin, j'ai profité du soleil dans le
dos pour faire des photos de jeux de dauphins depuis l'étrave, j'espère que ce sera bon. ils ont bien joué leurs rôles. En tout cas, moi, j'ai bien aimé.
ils avaient sur le dos des cicatrices comme des marques de peignes. Je me demande si ce ne sont pas des marques de
filins de chalutiers.
Après ces jours avec des scores faibles je pense qu'il me reste environ une semaine pour arriver à Newport.
Si la météo reste stable cela va être de la vrai croisière tout en douceur. Vent moyen au près d'abord puis vent de travers ensuite.
Juste ce qu'il faut pour arriver en pleine forme pour ranger le bateau pour l'été; mais cela c'est après.

Today I profit of wind to go sailing. We are sailing again. The anticyclone is a little way out and doesn’t seem to want to follow me anymore.
As consequence: a day of headwind but without tacking.
It’s peaceful; the boat is sailing easily without any water splashing with sun as bonus.
At 11 o’clock game the score is 109Nm in 24 hours and we still have 570Nm to sail.
I’ve computed, under the hypothesis of 100Nm a day, that we should arrive on Tuesday the 2dth in the evening.
This supposes that the met is convenient.
A 4 dolphins group came to play et stern this morning. As the sun was in my back, I took some pictures of their game from the stern. I hope they will be nice. They acted very well. Anyway I enjoyed it. They had on their back traces like comb marks. Perhaps fishing boats lines marks. After all these small scores days I think that we should arrive in Newport in about a week.
If we met remains as it is, it should be real cruise, all cosy: medium wind, first headwind then easing side wind afterwards. Exactly what is requested to arrive in good health condition to tide up the boat for the summer. But that is after.

Ce matin cela allait un peu trop vite et j'ai réduit pour ménager la bête.
Les dauphins sont revenus me faire un feu d'artifice cette nuit.
La vie suit son court paisible.

This morning it was running a bit too fast and I reduced sail to take care of the boat.

Je me suis fait piégé par un fichier météo. Je l'ai demandé assez tôt et ils m'ont envoyé le fichier d'hier après midi.
Je n'ai donc pas anticipé sur la rotation des vents d'aujourd'hui et je me retrouve au près.
Je ménage la bête et ai parfois l'impression d'être en croisière avec un bateau lourd qui roule et se tortille pour monter à la vague.
Hier il y a un superbe front occlus qui est passé en rinçant bien le bateau.
J'ai fini le dernier quignon de pain. La croûte était moisie mais l'intérieur allait à peu près.
Maintenant riz au petit déjeuner.
Hier, j'ai pris un plastique dans le poisson de l'hydrogénérateur ; à ma grande surprise il était écrit en français et c'était en emballage
jaune canari de rouleau de laine de roche. Les moules s'y étaient déjà bien accrochées. Il doit avoir fait le même trajet que moi.

I made a mistake reading a wind file. I’ve asked the file early and they send me the yesterday afternoon file while I was expecting todays one.
So, I didn’t anticipate todays’ wind rotation and I’m headwind.
I take care of the boat and I sometimes have the feeling of being in a cruise with a heavy boat that rolls and twist while going up the waves.
Yesterday we had a superb occlusion that passed and washed the boat.
I finished the last bit of bread. The outside had moisture but the inside was almost OK. Now I’ll have rice at breakfast.
Yesterday I catch a huge plastic in the hydro-generator fish. I was surprised to read French on it. It was a yellow wrapping plastic for house isolation.
Muscles were already growing on it. It must have come the same way as me.

Cela fait du bien quand cela s'arrête. Je me suis réveillé d'un petit somme au milieu de la nuit avec l'impression que le bateau
était passé sur sa barre et s'était mis à la cape tout seul. Non, c'était le vent qui s'était brusquement calmé et le bateau qui voguait
calmement sous-toilé; Cela ne hurlait plus et l'on n'avait plus l'impression d'être dans dans l'essoreuse.
Au matin c'était le calme, je me traîne à 2 kts alors que je vois encore la perturbation dans le ciel.
J'aurai eu ma dose de calme.
Je crois avoir compris ce qui se passe entre la barre et le PA (enfin la Néme panne). Car, selon ma spécialité il s'agit d'une panne multiple
avec au moins trois voir quatre dysfonctionnements en parallèle.
J'ai fini la dernière orange, il ne me reste plus que 2 pamplemousses pour mes petits déjeuners.
Il me reste de l'eau, du vin et du riz.... alors tout va bien.

It’s nice when it’s stops. I wake up from a little sleep in the middle of the night with the feeling that the boat had tack and was stopped. No it was the wind that had dropped suddenly and the boat was sailing nicely under-sailed. It was not roaring any more and I didn’t have any more the feeling of being inside the washing machine. In the morning it was calm again and I sail slowly at 2kts while I still can see the gale in the sky.
I would have my calm shear.
I think I understand what is happening between the helm and the autopilot (in fact the Nth failure). Because under my speciality it is a multiple failure, with at least three and perhaps four failures in parallel.
I’ve finished the last orange, I have 2 grapefruits left for my breakfast. I still have water, wine and rice… That’s largely sufficient.

C'est fait, je suis au mouillage à Newport. Je suis le premier arrivé, ce qui n'est pas particulièrement méritoire.
Le PA a tenu jusqu'au mouillage avec:
-le vérin qui s'est désolidarisé deux fois et dont il fallait refaire le brêlage tout les jours (comme les pansements)
- une alarme toute les 10 minutes depuis 15 jours,
-un recyclage tout les 2 jours et
-une instabilité de tout les moments.
J'ai même eu le droit à un bateau accompagnateur pour les derniers miles et pour klaxonner le passage de la ligne d'arrivée.
Il m'a apporté un sandwich au rôti de boeuf, c'est bon, et une bouteille de champagne francais.
Avec le brouillard, je n'ai vu la terre que en fin de matinée... en croisant un vieux 12m JI, c'est joli.
Newport s'est vraiment fait mériter:
- une perturbation apéritive,
- du brouillard et une mini dépression dans le passage à terre de Nantucket,
- tout ce qui flotte sur l'eau le 4 juillet,
- le plaisancier qui me vire sur la figure,
- un avis de cunimbe "sévère",
- une bulle dépressionnaire ce soir,
- et le vent dans le nez bien sur.
Je n'ai pas beaucoup dormi depuis 48 heures mais cela va.
C'est quand même plus facile au large, il y a de la place, pas de cailloux, pas de marrée, pas de bateaux...

It’zs done, I’m on a morring in Newport. I am the first to arrive. It is not very surprising.
The autopilot work till the morring with :
- the shaft who disassembled twice from the tiller and which needed to be fitted every day,
- an alarm every 10 minutes since 15 days,
- a reset every 2days,
- a continuous instability.
I even had a welcoming boat for the last miles that blow the horn while passing the arriving line.
Thanks to Dc Wallace who went at sea on July the 4th late in the night.
He brought me once moored 2 beef sandwiches; it is delicious and a French bottle of champagne.
It was a great moment.
With the fog I only sow shore in the end of the morning… while crossing an old 12m JI, it was nice.
Newport had really to be gained :
- as starter a low during the previous night,
- fog and a mini law in the Nantucket shoal,
- all what may float on the water on july the 4th,
- the nice sailor that tack and make a half turn just 3 length in front of you,
- a severe thunderstorm warning from the cost guards,
- a low bubble just outside Newport in the evening and
- headwind of course.
I haven’t slept much in the last 48 hours but I feel well.
It is much easier offshore, you have plenty of room, no rocks, no tide, and no other boats….
